The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety stated that there were 4,295 fatalities due to motorcycle accidents in the US last year. And according to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in Georgia, there are 134 reported motorcycle fatalities in 2012.
The figures are grave and alarming. It’s only proper that motorists should be reminded now and then to take precautions when treading the road.
The Causes of Alpharetta Motorcycle Fatalities
As we all know, motorcycles are one of the popular means of transportation. However, when compared to SUVs or sedans, motorcycles do not provide the protection of an enclosed vehicle.
Another obvious disadvantage of a motorcycle is that it is less visible and less stable than cars, so the risk of serious injury or death is higher in motorcycles compared to other motor vehicles.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveals that fatality in motorcycle accidents are 37 times higher than car crashes. Apart from its build, there are also other contributing factors that results in fatal motorcycle accidents.
The engine mechanisms of motorcycles have high-performance capabilities which expose many riders to quick accelerations and speed.
In most cases, overspeeding impairs the driver’s control over the vehicle and prevents him from avoiding obstructions that can lead to crash.
Because motorcyclists don’t have available access to airbags and seatbelts, they can easily get whiplashed from the vehicle if the motorcycle crashes or skids against an object while speeding.
DUI (Driving Under the Influence)
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed the current statistics that for many repetitive times, alcohol is the culprit to many motorcycle accidents. Recklessly driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a big no-no!
Furthermore, NHTSA added that even a low blood alcohol content could significantly reduce the reaction times and increase the probability of lane departure which can lead to off-road accidents or collisions. This irresponsibility is the reason why DUI accident lawyers always remind their clients to avoid riding when they are high on alcohol.
Failure To Wear Helmets
Because motorcycles lack the protection seat belt and even airbags, the only thing standing between death and the rider is a motorcycle helmet. Severe head injuries are the leading cause of fatality among motorcyclists that’s why using a helmet is vital. Using helmets while riding a motorcycle can prevent brain injuries by as much as 67 percent.
Suffice to say, most fatal motorcycle accidents can be due to the driver’s behavior or an error such as driving under the influence or the rider’s failure to wear a helmet. Nevertheless, do not follow the trends of recklessness and be a responsible driver.
